Who Are We?

The Amherst church of Christ is a nondenominational church that serves and worships God according to His word. We believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God and it is our guide.

Our leadership consists of elders, deacons, and ministers. The elders are the spiritual leaders of the church. The deacons are servants who work in specific areas of ministry. The ministers help equip the members for service, preach God’s message, and minister to the needs of the congregation.

God through His word has explained how He wants His people to worship Him and love one another. Jesus tells us, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." (Matthew 22:37-40)

As members of the body of Christ we strive to serve God in all that we do. Our prayer is to continue to grow in the knowledge of God, develop close relationships with our Christian family, and help people like Jesus helped people during His ministry here on earth.

History of the Amherst Church of Christ

The Amherst church of Christ was started by seven Christians who were worshipping with a congregation in Lorain. These members decided they wanted to begin a congregation in Amherst. On August 28, 1960, the first meeting of the Amherst church of Christ was held in a refurbished church building at the corner of Forest and Tenney Streets.

Soon thereafter, the men of the congregation began looking for property for the construction of a permanent building. They found 2 ½ acres of land on Washington Street. The building was completed in 1966 and the first event held at the building was the marriage of Frank and Gaye Klingman on November 25, 1966.  Since then, we have grown to a congregation of approximately 150 members.
