Who We Are

The Amherst Church of Christ was started by seven Christians who were worshipping with a congregation in Lorain. These members decided they wanted to begin a congregation in Amherst. On August 28, 1960, the first meeting was held in a refurbished church building at the corner of Forest and Tenney Streets. Soon thereafter, the men of the congregation began looking for property to construct a permanent building. They found 2.5 acres of land on Washington Street. The building was completed in 1966. Since then we have grown to over 150 members strong.

We are a nondenominational church that serves and worships God according to his word. We believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God and is our guide.

Every Sunday, you will observe the taking of the Lord's Supper. This is a tradition that was observed by the first century churches on the first day of every week. Taking of the Lord's Supper is for those who are baptized and is done to remember what our Lord Jesus Christ has done for us.

Collection plates are also passed every Sunday in order to maintain our finances. As our guest, you are not expected to contribute to the collection. Please feel comfortable to pass it down the row.

The singing is a cappella, meaning, we sing without musical instruments. The New Testament does not mention instruments in its writings, so we thought it best to exclude them from our worship. The singing is so beautiful, you will not notice the absence of instruments, and are encouraged to participate.
